i had downloaded C4D, and like all 3d rendering software, has a steep learning curve- so, the installer is now sitting on my desktop. i think i'll try it now, though- thanks for the help!

not bad, although you cant really control the thickness of the result.

yes you can, if you duplicate and composite the spikey objects an other way the outcome will change.
the render for breakthrough had more thickness then the outcome of this tutorial.
